We are hiring!

Activities Coordinator for Seniors, FT, On-Site (Hollywood, CA)

HCA is excited to announce the opening of a new full-time Activities Coordinator position in our nonprofit’s Los Angeles-based Resident Services Dept…

Resident Services
The Resident Services Dept is responsible for supporting low-income residents—youth, adults, seniors—that live in the apartment communities where we are partnered with 4 key services:

  •  On-site classes in health & wellness, tech, life skills, the arts, etc
  • Online classes in health & wellness, tech, life skills, the arts, etc (www.hcalive.org
  • An annual scholarship program for (young) adults & seniors (www.hcascholarship.org
  • General (resource) support & referrals

About This Position
While our Resident Services field positions have historically delivered the 4 key services above to multiple communities each week, this unique cruise ship director meets hotel concierge position will be stationed full-time at a 116-unit senior apartment community in the heart of Hollywood for the first 16-20 months. During this period, the community’s development company will be overseeing the construction of a second, adjacent tower next door to the existing building.

Your goal as the Activities Coordinator will be to help residents stay active during this transition, and to deflect from the challenges of change with a positive attitude, an inviting space, and a menu of engaging activities that touch on our core areas: health & wellness, technology, life skills, and the arts.

Examples of activities might include:

  • Step It Up: A walking club with different routes and potential stops along the way— coffee shops, Trader Joe’s, etc— with cooldown stretch upon return.
  • Makerspace: Arts, crafts, and maker-minded activities where you walk out with a tangible take-home piece or gift for a loved one.
  • Tech Help: Get help maneuvering life with that strange new digital doohickey.  Microsoft, Zoom, Google, and social media qs? Bring your device—we got you!

Examples of hotel concierge-esque responsibilities might include:

  • General refreshing: Putting out fresh newspapers, rotating magazines, fresh flowers, a bowl of fruit with regularity.
  • Lobby music: Maintaining lobby playlists during on-site hours to reduce outside sounds and add to a cheerful and calm ambience.
  • Whiteboard updates: Adding weekly activities details and any known construction updates to the community whiteboard.

Who You Are
To a large degree, this position will take shape around your strengths or skillsets in and outside of the above-listed focus areas. Nevertheless, our team agrees that these qualities are central to success in this position and in our field:

  •  Adaptable: A quiet office without interruption sounds terribly dull to you. If a resident with limited mobility comes to your disco dance class, you are quick to modify movements for them.
  • Extroverted people person: You aren’t afraid to say hello first and you get along with most people. You understand the importance of building and preserving relationships.
  • Great customer service: You are polished and professional even during difficult conversations. You are an active listener who knows how to move the conversation forward in a positive way.
  • Humble: If only 1 person shows up to class, you still bring your A-game. You don‘t mind being the only degreed person in the room. You are prepared to surrender expectations and meet people where they are in life to move forward.
  • Versatile: You pride yourself on being a jack-of-all trades, rather than a subject specialist. If residents need help with something new to you, you are excited to learn more about it.

Bonus points for any of these…

  • Design savvy: Flyers, postcards, and posters will help you promote your class contributions. If you can easily navigate your way through Canva or other design programs (InDesign, Photoshop, etc), do let us know.
  • Pianist: This building has a beautiful baby grand piano in the lobby that would enjoy some attention, not to mention some welcoming tunes for residents passing by.
  • Yoga, Pilates, Zumba, or dance certifications: Exercise classes are almost universally enjoyed by seniors. A certification or experience in this area will serve you well in terms of class offerings.

Bennies + Compensation
This is a salaried position at $45,000 annually with 16+ paid holidays each year—which includes an annual closure from Christmas Eve to New Year’s—plus 10 days PTO and health insurance coverage for starters.

How to Apply
Email nicole@hcahousing.org with your cover letter and resume, plus the titles and descriptions for 3 classes you would teach. Add your personal flavor!
